Who we are

The hospitality industry has been a hub for workers of many different backgrounds.  Hospitality is one of the most popular employers of newcomers to Canada. It’s a career, a passion, a stepping stone, and a side gig for all walks of life in Toronto. There are over 200, 000 people in this industry within the GTA. Even though the hospitality sector has been a cornerstone of the culture of this city, it is not regulated the same way other industries are. Unfortunately, a lack of benefits, wage theft, unsafe work environments and other labour violations plague the people that work within the industry.

The Society (of) Hospitality Workers is a democratic organization of workers who join together to collectively work towards better workplaces. Our objective is to have a unified voice as an industry, and to work towards better wages, benefits, safer working environments, and better treatment accross the entire sector. 

Our first initiative is a portable benefits program for all hospitality workers. Once we have 500 members, we can start approaching companies to work out a portable benefits package for all members. This does not affect your employer and does not require company wide enrolment.
